Gokyo Lakes of Nepal is one of such lakes, where there are not one or two, but six lakes. It is mainly known for the sequence of alpine lakes in Gokyo Valley. The Gokyo lakes are no wonder beautiful but, they have religious significance as well.

About Gokyo Lakes

Gokyo Lakes are located in the Solukhumbu District of Sagarmatha Zone in the north-eastern part of Nepal. The Lakes are the oligotrophic lakes in Nepal in the Sagarmatha National Park. Gokyo Lakes are at an elevation of 4,700-5,000 meters/15,400-16,400 feet above sea level, and they are the world’s highest freshwater Lake System comprising six lakes. Let us know about all those six Gokyo Lakes.

Gokyo Cho: Gokyo Cho is also known as Dudh Pokhari and is also the main lakes amongst six other in the list. The lake is spread in the area of 42.9 hector/106 acres, and its depth goes to the height of 43 meters. It is also the most sought lake by the visitors of Gokyo Lakes.

Thonak Cho: Thonak Cho is the largest lake among all the six with an area of 35.07 meters/160.8 acres. Also, it is also the deepest in the list with the depth of 62.4 meters.

Gyazumpa Cho: It is another lake of Gokyo Lakes, and it is spread in the area of 29 hectors/72 acres.

Tanjung Cho: Tanjung Cho of Gokyo Lakes is spread in an area of 16.95 hectors/41.9 meters.

Ngojumba Cho: It is the smallest lake of the six in the list with the area of only 14.39 hectors/35.6 acres.

Longpanga Cho: Longpanga Cho is another of Gokyo Lakes, and in your visit to Gokyo Lakes, it is first one to come in your sight.

Religious Importance of Gokyo Lakes

Gokyo Lakes are the sacred site for both Hindu as well as Buddhist of Nepal. The site of Gokyo Lakes is worshipped by devotees as the residing place of “Nag Devta” (Snake God). Also, there is a temple of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva in the eastern side of the lake. During the festival of Janai Purnima, the lakes are visited by hundreds of devotees to take a bath in the holy water of those lakes.

Way Up to the Gokyo Lakes

There are many-many trekking destinations in Nepal, which are very famous and favorite to trekkers and trekking to Gokyo Lakes is certainly one of them. Thousands of tourist make up to this amazing lakes yearly.

To start your trek, you need to take a domestic flight to Lukla from Kathmandu.

The flight is most spectacular, with an amazing landing when you will see the beautiful views of the Himalayas, hills, and the village of Lukla. From Lukla, you will trek to Phakding. While trekking to Phakding, you will walk past some beautiful views, and you will walk through the bank of the Dudh Koshi River.

After Phakding comes to Namche Bazaar. Namche Bazaar is a very popular tourist-hub, where most of the trekkers stay for a few days before moving towards the higher altitude regions.

Namche Bazaar is the charming town with shops that meet all the needs of trekkers, and it is also rich in culture and tradition. If you forget any things about trekking, then Namche Bazaar is the place where you can buy anything, and above this place, there is very less possibility of getting the items and equipment.

From Namche Bazaar itself, you will see the view of many beautiful mountains including the Mount Everest itself, Thamserku, Ama Dablam, and others.

From Namche Bazaar, you will trek to a village named Dole and to Machhermo. You will pass through the captivating views of Thamserku, Cho Oyo, and Kantega. And, then, you will reach Gokyo Village. Gokyo Village is a small and yet charming village located in the lap of Himalayas.

The village is also the highest settlement area in the whole world as it is located at the height of 4,750 meters above sea level. From Gokyo Village, you will encounter all the six splendid lakes. You can also take a dip in one of those lakes, as they are believed to be the holy water by two main religion of Nepal.

After having fun by exploring all the six lakes, your next point is Gokyo Ri. Gokyo Ri is a peak with the altitude of 5,357 meters above sea level. You are in this trek for trekking, not mountain climbing, I know, but after all this effort climbing a little height can make you the mountain climber.

And, Gokyo Ri offers the view of 4 highest peaks in the world i.e., Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. So, grab the moment and get the victory.

Now, you will trek down to Khumjung village, which is a very distinctive Himalayan village rich in culture and tradition. Khumjung is mostly influenced by the Tibetan culture, and there you can see some historical things.

In Khumjung, there is a school built by Sir Edmund Hilary himself, and in a near village named Khunde, there is a hospital, which too was built by Edmund Hilary. There is also a yeti scalp in the Khumjung Monastery, which is the very rare thing in the whole world. You will see all this ancient and historical pieces in just one village, Khumjung.

Now, from Khumjung, you will be back to the tourist hub, Namche Bazaar. You can stay at Namche and have some small celebration for making this trekking and getting the one of the best time of life. From, Namche Bazaar, you will go down to Phakding and then to the Lukla, which is the end point of your amazing Gokyo Lake trek.

Taking a domestic flight from Lukla, you will arrive at Kathmandu and head towards your home or your next destination of fun and adventure.
