Location of Mount Everest

Mount Everest is the tallest peak in the world above sea level located in the Mahalangur Himal range of the Himalayas. The Everest doesn’t solely lie in only one country. The summit of Everest lies on the border between Nepal and China.

Height of Mount Everest

In 2005, China measured the height of the mountain rock and reported height of 8844.43 meters.

Nepal argued that the height should also contain the snow height and final height should be 8,848 meters. In 2010, Nepal and China reached an agreement that the official height is 8,848 meters and that the mountain’s rock height is 8,844 meters.

Naming the Tallest Mountain of the World

In 1960, Government of Nepal coined the mountain “Sagarmatha” to call the mountain in a local name. Early Tibetan map of 1733 mentioned “Chomolungma.”, referring to the Everest. Chomolungma means Goddess Mother of Mountains. In Darjeeling, people named Everest as Deodhunga which translates to the Holy Mountain.

The existing several local names of Everest was problematic in referring to the mountain. So Andrew Waugh, a British Surveyor General of India thought to have one single name for Everest. Waugh suggested the peak be named after his successor, Sir George Everest, a former Surveyor General of India.

Waugh proposed the name “Everest” to Royal Geographic Society in 1857.

George, however, protested the name for many reasons, but despite several objections, in 1865, the Royal Geographic Society accepted the name and declared the tallest mountain in the world as Mount Everest.

When can you Climb Mount Everest

Most successful attempts to the Everest summit takes place in April and May. The popular period to climb Everest is in “The Window.” The window comes once every year around 10th May and lasts about a week.

The prime time to complete the expedition is before 23 May, when heavy monsoon starts to hit the Khumbu region.

You can climb the Everest in other seasons too but look for low winds and clear sky. Don’t expect to climb Everest in the winter season. Tourists prefer to climb the Everest from the Southeast face from Nepal as the southern route has higher summit ratio with low casualty than from the north ridge.

Yearly 150 foreigners and 250 Nepalese reach the summit of Mount Everest from the south ridge.

Years of expeditions have built a distinctive route to the summit of Everest. People don’t prefer the northern ridge because of difficulty to scale the path and also of bureaucratic disputes between Tibet and China.

Whenever people talk about climbing Everest, they chiefly mean from the Everest Base Camp in Nepal situated at 5,364 meters. In a cleaning campaign of the surrounding Everest, people collected more than 8 tons of garbage materials that consisted of left tents, human waste bags, plastic bags, cans and food packets.

Despite the successful cleaning campaign, there are still many waste products lying in the Camps 1 and Camp 2 en route to the summit.

Mountaineers report litters and garbage all the way to Camp 4.

You must travel responsibly and must not encourage such activities when you are in the Everest region. It is very had to manage the garbage management system above 5,000 meters where human settlements and infrastructure cannot reach on a regular basis. It is up to you to recognize the negative impact your litter and garbage causes to the surrounding Everest.

You must prioritize environmental protection and eco-tourism even when in life-threatening heights. The recent events of garbage mismanagement by tourists visiting Everest has raised national concerns. The government of Nepal has introduced strict rules to minimize the garbage issue.

We suggest you carry your tent and other materials down with you from Everest. You can choose to hire porters to carry your stuff. However, if you leave your stuff and litter the campsite, you will lose your security deposit of $4,000. The beautiful Himalayas and the Everest don’t need your waste, and it would be a lot better to carry your garbage with you and dispose of them properly in cities at lower altitudes.

Summit History of Everest

Mount Everest is the most climbed peaks above 8,000 meters. Everest is not the most challenging peak to climb in the world, but being the tallest mountain in the world, Everest gains massive hype for its height. Before Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa became the first to summit the Everest, many writers mentioned the magnificence of Everest in various books and speeches. Since then, many people attempted to scale the Everest.

Nepal didn’t allow foreigners in the country, so foreigners attempted Everest from the North side. The first expedition on Everest was by the British from the North Tibetan ridge. The expedition reached 7000 meters in 1921, and 8,320 meters in 1922 expedition, the first time any human reached a height excess of 8,000 meters. The 1924 team is famous and a major controversial issue among mountaineers.

George Mallory and Andrew Irvine made a final summit attempt and was spotted high in the mountains. The duo never returned and was reported lost. It is unclear whether the pair was successful in reaching the summit of Mount Everest and is still a topic of debate. Mountaineers found George Mallory’s body after 75 years in 1999 at 8,155 meters on the northern face.

Many expeditions started scaling Everest from the southern ridge. The Swiss expedition 1952 first reached 7,986 meters and later Tenzing Norgay, and Raymond Lambert reached an elevation of 8,595 meters, a record climbing altitude. British expedition in 1953 then hired Tenzing Norgay Sherpa.

Edmund Hillary, a New Zealand mountaineer and philanthropist and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Mount Everest at 11:30 am on 29th May 1953.

Hillary and Tenzing spent about 15 minutes on the summit, clicked photos and left some chocolates and a cross on the snow.

Since then, many expeditions have been successful to reach the summit of Everest. The sublime Everest has taken over more than 288 lives of mountaineers. Around 80 people died in their descent. The major cause of death in Everest is Avalanche, falls, altitude sickness, oxygen issues and exposure to intense cold.
