Tamang Heritage Trail is a sparsely visited trail in the vicinity of Langtang valley and the sacred lake, Gosaikunda. The trek is an extraordinary and unexplored one, which passes through the quaint and traditional village of Tamang people who have been residing in mountain region for hundreds of years.

Tamang Heritage Trail is composed of rich Tibetan lifestyle, culture, and tradition, monasteries, traditional arts, and craftsmanship. Initially, the trail was set up in 2004 as a community-based project. The aim behind introducing this new trekking trail was to uplift lifestyle and economy of locals through tourism.

Background of Tamang Heritage Trail

Culture and tradition of Tamang people is the major attraction of Tamang Heritage Trail. Although Tamang is a Nepali ethnic group, Tamangs of Heritage trail follow Tibetan culture and tradition, and much of their lifestyle is influenced by the same. They are descendants of Tibet, and most of them are Mongoloid background.

Looking back, Tibetans settled in Langtang region because it was a famous trade route between Nepal and Tibet back then. Tibetans settled in the vicinity of trading route and later years made their home. However, Tibetans weren’t allowed to enter Nepal, so they started calling themselves as Tamangs of Nepal. As Tamang and Tibetans have similar Mongolian face, it was a believable story.

In Langtang region, the majority of people follows Buddhism and are depended on tourism and agriculture as a major source of income.

Tamang Heritage Trail is located foothills of Langtang and Ganesh Himal. It lies in the north of Kathmandu and one of the best trekking trail of Langtang region. Your trek to Tamang Heritage Trail starts from Syabrubesi which is about six hour from Kathmandu. You will trek within the Langtang National Park which is popularly known as the home of red panda and snow leopards. You might as well witness several other wildlife.

The trail difficulty is average in Tamang Heritage Trail. The highest altitude you reach is 3,165 meters at NagthaliGhyang from where you can witness the spectacular view of LangtangLirung and Ganesh Himal. However, it will be better if you are in best physical state.

During the year 2015, Nepal suffered the loss of many lives, along with many devastating damages. Tamang Heritage Trail was also affected in several areas. Many tourists canceled the trek in Tamang heritage trail after the earthquake as many villages which falls in the trail were destroyed.

Although the villages suffered damages, the trail sustained very less destruction, and with a survey conducted after three months of earthquake, it was reported that route was undamaged and suitable for further treks.

Tamang Heritage trail is a least visited trekking trail, and it is a very reason why their culture and tradition are still preserved. Until 2004 people didn’t see many visitors, and it has aided in preserving their core culture. Even today, they speak Tibetan language.

Hot water bath

Well, it is no ordinary hot water bath. It is a natural hot water bath in a place called Tatopani and Tatopani is a mid-trek spot in Tamang Valley trek. The place is very famous for natural hot spring bath where tourists and visitors take a few hours and relax in the soothing water. The place is famous among people who want something refreshing and new. There is a belief regarding the bath that, it has some kind of medicinal and healing powers. The water of Tatopani has high mineral content, and its benefit includes blood purification through the elimination of toxins in the body and reactivating delayed metabolism in people suffering rheumatism. The water also helps as a muscle relaxant for stiffness and rehabilitation.
