Canyoning is the act of traveling or a journey through canyons that includes the techniques of outdoor activities which may be hiking, climbing, jumping, swimming, abseiling and many more. Although, canyoning is often taken as hiking through the canyons, in technical terms it is an activity that is related to ropes and rattles, climbing up and down a canyon technically and also includes technical swings.
Along with the rocks, gorges and the walls, the waterfalls are also the best for canyoning. Nepal is a country of geographical diversity and rich in these waterfalls falling through the hills. The spectacular waterfalls in one hand enhance the natural beauty and on the other hand, are the sites of adventures. The canyoning is being an important factor to promote the mountain tourism in Nepal along with the trekking, climbing, and rafting.
Canyoning is a must do a thing for adventure lovers and as well as those who love the beauty of the falling water. Nepal will be a perfect destination if you fall under the category. Here are some of the places in Nepal where you can have a lifetime experience with the canyons and the water:
Jalbire is somewhere you would get best canyoning experience in Nepal. Canyoning in Jalbire is a once in a lifetime experience with the amazing waterfalls, rock slides, and the jumping rocks. Many tourists also refer Jalbire as “the best attraction in Nepal.” There are about five waterfalls which are about 45-50 meters high.
Jalbire lies in Mugling-Narayanghad road and is 100 km away from the capital city, Kathmandu. About 2 to 3 hours drive in a private vehicle will drop you to Jalbire from Kathmandu. You can also get a local bus from the New Bus Park Gongabu to reach there. It will take you about a walk of 15 to 20 minutes to reach the Lamo Jharana which is about 95 meters long.
Kathmandu leaves no stone unturned for the tourists visiting in the country. Not only rich in culture and tradition, but the capital city of the country is also always ready to provide you with the marvelous adventure activities. You can find places around Kathmandu for Canyoning. Canyoning around Kathmandu includes canyoning in Kakani, Sundarijal and other places around. Kathmandu also provides with the amazing experience of climbing up the rocks in nature.
Kakani is the site for canyoning near to Kathmandu. Kakani is 35 kilometers away from Kathmandu Ring road and is very easily accessible. Kakani has two canyons namely Phung Phugye (185meters) and Chhahare (145 meters) situated in the Dhansar and Jurethum village in Kakani. From Phung Phugye, you can see the Ganesh Himal along with the view of Manaslu and Langtang region.
You can drive in a private vehicle to reach the site. You can also catch a local bus from Machhapokhari, Kathmandu to reach Kakani. When you reach the village, you need to walk for about half an hour to reach to the Canyon of Phung Phugye. You can start your canyoning after that. Your canyoning will last about 2 to 3 hours, and then you should trek the same way to reach the road.
You can also plan a night stay at Jurethum village. Next morning you can have a walk around the village. You can see fish farming in the village where farmers farm world-famous Japanese Trout Fish.
Sundarijal is a beautiful destination for a day trip canyoning. Resting in the bottom of the Shivapuri National Park, it lies 15 kilometers away northeast of the Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. Sundarijal Bus Park is about 1-hour drive away from Thamel, Kathmandu. From Sundarijal Bus Park, you can catch a bus that will take you up to the Sundarijal village. The site for the canyoning awaits you 30 minutes walk uphill from the village.

Charaudi is located 56 kilometers west of the capital city, Kathmandu. It takes you around 35 minutes drive from Kathmandu to reach Charaudi. If you are for a rafting tour in Nepal, then Charaudi is the best option. You need not worry even if you are visiting in the monsoon time. During the monsoon, most of the waterfalls have a huge volume of water making canyoning and rafting difficult, but it is not the case in Charaudi. It is a lot of fun with amazing waterfalls, fun walks and the pool at the bottom to splash you up. You can also get the chance to enjoy and do some chitchat with the children of the village in the pond. Such a great mixture, isn’t it?
Pokhara also offers tourists an opportunity to have the thrilling experience of climbing the rocks accompanied by the waterfalls. The canyoning spot is an hour ride from the main city towards the trails of Lwang Ghaley Village, VDC Ward No. 5/6. Standing in the spot, you will be at the height of 1350 meters from the sea level. You can accomplish the challenging activity of canyoning through the cave. The spot serves you with the fall down from the waterfalls that are 45 meters and 75 meters long down resting in the clear ponds.
