Being the home of most of the tallest mountains of the world and several big and small mountains, Nepal truly offers the best of the best. “Home of Himalayas”: this title of Nepal isn’t named for nothing.
Trekking is a fun outdoor activity. It is a recreational activity often done with friends and family. But if you are visiting another nation for the sole purpose of trekking, then it certainly won’t be as easy as you have been doing it. Although there are many trekking destinations with easy to challenging difficulty level, you need some of the basic and important trekking tips. You need these tips because Nepal will be a new world for you, new place, new language, new culture and tradition, different beliefs, so there will be a lot to adjust. Your stay might last for some weeks,but if you aren’t clever enough, then things might come up to your health and safety. So, here are some of the tips for all the trekkers:
-If this is your first time of trekking, then it will be better if you start putting yourself up for some exercise and walking habit before the 3-4 weeks of starting the actual trek. It will help you stretch your muscles and make you prepared.
-Visit the clinic for the checkup to ensure that you are healthy enough to go for a trek. The level of difficulty in trekking is directly related to your fitness so it will be better if you postpone the plan for trek if there are any health issues.
-If you are planning to trek with your family, then trekking in higher altitude regions isn’t the ideal choice as children and elders are very vulnerable to altitude sickness, and the tracks might be challenging for them to conquer.
-Every equipment and items you carry, do not forget to take an extra as well. Who knows what emergency will occur on the way.
-While planning the total trekking days, keep 2 or 3 days extra. The weather conditions are very unpredictable in the upper regions. Also, the internal flights might get delayed or even canceled due to weather and other technical reasons. Keeping few days on the stock will let you enjoy the trek with ease and no hurry. You can use those days by resting and visiting the traditional villages and get to know their tradition, culture,and lifestyle in a closer way.
-Taking guides and porter is a question of a dilemma for trekkers. It is wise to take a guide along with you if you this is the first time in Nepal and you are not very familiar with the Nepali language and culture. Guides are the natives of Nepal; they will be a great aid in your trekking. Also, they will help you get a closer insight into the life of real Nepal. There are some treks like Annapurna Base Camp and Everest Base Camp where the trails are marked. If you are confident and has been to this trek before, then you can go solo trek as well. Likewise using a potter is a good choice too. They will help you with the heavy luggage and make sure you do not get lost. Using local guides and porters also aid in country’s economy by providing job to the locals.
-While trekking in Nepal, you have to keep your expectations very low even for the basic things. Like every day shower is a luxury while trekking in Nepal. You may have to go for weeks without bathing. Water is not available everywhere in the higher regions. You might get the water service, but they will be extremely expensive. Also, the foods and accommodations are very basic. You will get the regular food dal, bhat, and tarkari.
-You must not forget any items while trekking. However, here are some items you must not forget to take. First aid kit, toilet paper, torch with extra batteries, hand sanitizer, cameras, antibiotics for upper respiratory and stomach illness, sleeping bags and personal medications if they are any. Also, do not forget to take enough cash as banks and ATMs aren’t available in the mountain area.
-You can go a little beyond the basic items of trekking, especially if you are trekking on the off beaten path. Solar charger (most places doesn’t have good electricity services), iPod, GPS, and other gadgets, chocolate bars, and protein bars, and cell phone.
-While trekking in Nepal, you must not forget to get the permits as they are very important to access the destination. It would be fruitless if you went without permits. Get all the information about the trek you are going for and acquire all the documents needed.
-Altitude Sickness is another thing to watch out. While traveling in the mountain area, you might suffer from the altitude sickness. You must not trek for more than 200-300 meters once you have reached the height of 3,500 meters. Altitude sickness is common while trekking in Nepal. Shortness of breath, dizziness, headache, vomiting are some of the symptoms. If you feel any of those symptoms, then take an immediate action keep yourself safe. The best way to keep yourself away from altitude sickness is to acclimatize for few days in the lower altitude regions.
-Another thing to keep in mind is water while trekking in Nepal. The price of water per bottle is very high in the higher altitude regions. You can refill your water bottles after paying a certain price as many villages have purified water stations. Or else you can carry a water filter and purification tablets.
